Joyce Wheeler

One of the first people to use the first 'practical' stored program computer in the UK.

Joyce Wheeler was a researcher at Cambridge University who was among the earliest to use EDSAC (Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator), the first 'practical' stored program computer in the UK.

Joyce found that her affinity with applied maths, in combination with computing, offered her many and varied opportunities throughout her career in Cambridge.

In this film she shares her inspirational story. Produced by Google as part of a series of short films highlighting women's involvement in the early days of computing.

“ Having skills in computing at the time was fairly rare so I was able to get employment in various fields including applied mathematics throughout my whole career in Cambridge ”
